YouTube Music is currently testing a new feature that allows users to generate personalized radio stations using AI-powered prompts. This experimental functionality aims to provide a more customized music listening experience by leveraging generative AI technology.

The new feature, which is being rolled out to a limited number of users, can be accessed through a card in the YouTube Music home feed labeled “Ask for music any way you like.” When tapped, this card opens a chat-based interface where users can enter a text prompt to describe the type of music they want to hear.

Some example prompts mentioned in the search results include “Catchy pop choruses,” “Epic soundtracks,” “Upbeat pop anthems,” and even a “Surprise me!” option that generates a radio station automatically. The prompts are then used by YouTube Music’s AI system to curate a personalized playlist for the user.

The generated radio stations are presented with the prompt used as the station name, along with a description. For instance, the prompt “Queer Hip Hop Beats” resulted in a station named “Rhymes and flows from the heart, a celebration of queer pride in hip hop’s art” .

While the feature is currently in an experimental phase, with limited availability, it represents YouTube Music’s efforts to stay competitive in the music streaming landscape by leveraging the latest advancements in generative AI. By allowing users to create custom radio stations through natural language prompts, the platform aims to enhance the music discovery and personalization experience.

As the feature continues to be tested and refined, it will be interesting to see how YouTube Music’s AI-powered radio stations perform compared to the recommendation algorithms of other leading music streaming services. This development highlights the growing role of AI in shaping the future of music consumption and discovery .
